Introduction

 

Covid-19 has a great impact on Japan’s society and economy. Who can image to shift to such a different environment compared to before? I think there are many changes after pandemic in Japan such as economy, education, industry and lifestyle. I am interested in doing research about the influence of covid-19. But this topic is too large to write down a lot of things on the document, so I focus on the topic about the change of working style to teleworking because recently I have been done industry research before preparing job hunting. This information is going to be useful for me to think about my career. Furthermore, it’s variable to share to everyone about the teleworking (the way of working, working value, working structure and a new environment) so today I'm going to show my research from a deep investigation.

What is COVID-19

 

Firstly, I’m explaining what covid-19 is. According to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death. The number of confirmed cases in Japan is 20,791(As of July 11, 2020) and almost 982 of them is death because of infection. On the other hand, the number of confirmed cases in USA is 3,106,931 (As of July 11, 2020) and almost 132,885 of them is death. There are many people suffered from this disease and this is serious situation to damage to all over the world in terms of lifestyle, economy and so on. Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose by mask when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. It is essential to avoid spreading the virus and take care of myself. This virus made us significantly change our lifestyle.  

 

The change of working style

 

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changes how Japan work. Increasing the number of infections, the government calls to reduce face to face communication among people and many company have to quickly adapt telecommunicating. Also, they carry out other measures to prevent the spread of the disease like office reform in order to take social distance. Office worker trended to work remotely from the house. When taking place to the meeting, they use online tools and talk each other on the internet. Even business card can be provided to customers online. Traditionally all of the employee went to office and started to work. However, there is a possibility to infect to many people under the current severe situation, so there are a few people in the office. From now on, More and more people have a experience to work from home due to promote telework. In other words, online working become more common in the future because of pandemic.

According to the survey, which is conducted by Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO)May,27 through Monday 2020, only about 30% of Japan's firms in US don’t have a plan to have all their employee return to office to work by the end of the year. Also in Japan, Many company said they will continue to push teleworking after the state of emergency finish. Let’s take a look of another example of major company. Hitachi Ltd. said they will continue to encourage work-from-home arrangements to reduce the risk of infection and avoid the spread of the virus like second wave of infection. Therefore, around 70% of the employees on average have been working from home and promoting teleworking. I realized a lot of company introduce to the teleworking and they are going to continue to work remotely. we don't know when this serious incident continues and happen again, so it is essential for the firms to take some measures and make a new environment.

In addition, the new way of thinking will be fostered during pandemic. In the future, perhaps people will go to office when they need to or want to. Meeting on conference will offer a remote option. Moreover, the new theory was born: “Office unnecessary theory. Some firms already said the company’s office will do scale down because it is proved we can work at home even if the office is nothing. There is even a company an employee can opt to work from home permanently. We have to adapt a new environment and exchange new theory and value with the colleagues and supervisors in the whole society.

The merit and demerits of working from home

 

There are many merits to accept a remote working. Firstly, as I already said, Working from home can protect the employee to infect the disease. if everyone come back to office and restart the operating in a same way, there are possibilities to increase the risk of infection and the business will be stagnant, so it's the best way to protect the company itself. Secondly, it can improve working and life balance. Saving the time of committing, it is efficient to make own time to use hobby and take a rest, And it can relieve stress due to avoid crowded public transportation. In addition, the worker who have own child become easier to keep balance between working and childcare. It can get benefits to expand the time of spending with child and taking care of child. People get more and more used to working from home, it is possible for employee to achieve work-life balance. Besides these, it helps the company to save money like the office rent and getting better to make the efficiency and productivity partly.

 However, there are some demerits to accept the teleworking. in the home, there is a possibility to be in trouble like network error and Wi-Fi problem. Some people can't maintain these kinds of environment because of their financial problem, so they are going to be challenging to set up the internet program. Therefore, the government or the company must support the financial aid or provide and install a great network device for them. Another probrem is productivity. It might decrease the business performance unless both company and employee completely adapt to current situation depends on the company. Communication is very important through teleworking. Also, It is difficult to keep motivated and concentrate on the work because there’s many distraction in the house like family’s conversation.

 

Conclusion / Summary

 

Our society definitely change the working style from now on. there are both effective and ineffective aspects in teleworking. I believe understanding this information is very helpful to adapt new environment. And it is important to know how we deal with these problems. I feel the society is required the ability of Innovating, creative skills and flexibility to get better for company in the future.
